Cupping is one of the oldest forms of manual therapy. The suction and pressure provided by cupping loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system which makes it an excellent treatment in many cases.
What is Cupping massage good for?
- High blood pressure
- Back, shoulders and neck pain
- Stiff muscles
- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Migraines
- Rheumatism
- Cellulite
- Blood circulation.
Technique:
By placing a glass or a silicone cup onto the skin, the therapist creates a vacuum in the cup which draws the skin, muscle, and fascia up into the cup. This vacuum can be created with a hand suction pump. Cupping is used as a direct clinical application. The therapist notes an area of restriction and applies the suction directly onto it to affect change.
Benefits:
- Relaxation: suction provides a negative pressure on the skin, muscles, and fascia. This is in contrast to the positive pressure of the deep tissue massage, which is a very relaxing and soothing experience.
- Promotes and enhances blood circulation which speeds up muscle recovery. The negative pressure from the suction allows new blood to flow into that area of tissue.
- Provides a feeling of relief from physical and emotional tensions.
- The exchange of blood allows the removal of toxins and dead cells.
- Warms the skin, and softens tissues to regain elasticity.
- Reduces inflammation.
Cupping for slimming purposes:
Cupping reduces the appearance of cellulite, but this is likely a temporary effect. To maintain good results it’s advised to follow this treatment on regular basis. The process is done using glass, bamboo, ceramic, or silicone cups.
Researches show that cupping treatments can help to alleviate appearance of obesity. Patients subject to cupping have experienced a reduction of body weight, body mass index and body fat percentage and their bodies showed many signs of metabolic restoration. It does so by removing stagnations in the blood helping to loosen up connective tissue and opens up capillaries, which allows new oxygenated blood to pour into the area of application. Which helps the cells to grow, repair and enhances the metabolism.
Cupping is one of the best deep tissue treatments as it can reach tissues up to four inches beneath the skin. It’s a detoxification of the body as it helps to flush out the stagnated blood, toxins and broken fat cells through the lymphatic system. It can even help remove deep fat cells stuck around internal organs.
Side effects:
The major side effect of cupping is bruising. In many cases specially if the subject has light and sensitive skin, the cupping treatment will certainly leave marks on the skin lasting from a few days to a few weeks. For this reason we advise to seek this treatment in the cold seasons when the bare skin of the body is not exposed.
Contraindications:
Cupping is not recommended for those taking blood thinning medication, or with sunburns, excessive dry skin, wounds or skin ulcer, skin cancer, fractured bones or dislocated joints, muscular dystrophy or recent trauma . It is also not recommended for people with liver, kidney or heart failure or those with a pacemaker. As well, it can’t be used if you have hemophilia, anemia or similar blood disorders.
